Types of Coin Auctions We Offer

We aim to cater to every numismatic interest—ranging from everyday collectors to specialized investors—within each of our auctions. Rather than holding completely separate events (e.g., an exclusively “Ancient Coin Auction” or “Bullion Auction”), we typically feature a mix of categories all in one sale. So whether you’re after Roman denarii, gold sovereigns, or PCGS-graded coins, you’ll likely find them in a single Copeland Roberts auction.

Below are the main categories you’ll often see within the same auction:

Rare 1930 Australian Penny – Commonwealth of Australia one penny coin, highly sought after by collectors

Featuring a mix of rare and collectible coins, including gold sovereigns, silver proofs, PCGS-graded pieces, and ancient coins, all within a single auction event.

Rare & Key Date Coins

Roman, Greek, Byzantine, and other historical coins appear alongside modern collectibles, catering to a wide range of collectors.

Ancient & World Coins

PCGS & NGC-Graded Coins

For those who prioritize authenticated, professionally graded coins, our auctions feature a variety of certified numismatic treasures.

We also offer collectible paper money from Australia and around the globe, making our events appealing to currency enthusiasts.

Banknotes & Currency

1910 Australian One Shilling silver coin featuring King Edward VII and the Commonwealth coat of arms, obverse and reverse view.

Featuring a mix of rare and collectible coins, including gold sovereigns, silver proofs, PCGS-graded pieces, and ancient coins, all within a single auction event.

Why Buy Coins at Auction?

Coin auctions are one of the best ways to acquire truly special pieces—spanning ancient coin auctions, penny auctions, even rare coin auctions for key date coins. While dealers set fixed prices, auctions allow collectors and investors to compete for unique finds. While coins can be bought and sold at dealers, online marketplaces, or coin shows, an auction house can often provide the best balance between fair pricing and expert validation. You won’t need to haggle with a seasoned collector or worry about unscrupulous practices; the open bidding environment ensures each coin sells at a mutually agreed-upon price.

Access coins, bullion, banknotes, and collectibles that are often unavailable in standard retail. If you’re searching for specific numismatic treasures—like silver coin auctions or rare gold coin auctions—an auction can be your best bet.

Wider Selection

Thanks to transparent bidding, you may win a coin below what a dealer or private seller would charge—especially if you’re a newcomer without negotiating expertise. When multiple bidders vie for the same coin, the final hammer price reflects true market demand, providing a real-time snapshot of collector interest.

How are invoices calculated?

Understanding how your invoice is calculated helps ensure full transparency throughout the auction process. Still have questions? Contact our team and we’ll be happy to walk you through your invoice step-by-step.

Hammer Price

The hammer price is the SOLD price on an item at auction. If an item sells for $500, your invoice will include the lot sale price.

Buyers' Premium

All sold lots attract a buyers' premium of 22% inclusive of GST. If you purchase a lot for $500, you will be charged a $110 buyers' premium.

Shipping

All orders are charged $15 for domestic orders. Shipping is a flat rate, allowing bidders to save when purchasing multiple lots.

Insurance

Insurance is an optional addition at the buyers' discretion. Insurance is charged at 2% of the overall value of the invoice and it's the buyers' sole responsibility to ensure they pay for insurance.

FAQs about Coin Auctions

We’ve compiled answers to common questions from both new and experienced collectors. Whether you’re curious about bidding, auction fees, or the best way to participate, here’s what you need to know.

  • What is a buyer’s premium?

A percentage fee added to the final hammer price. If you win a lot at $100, and the buyer’s premium is 22%, you pay $122 total (plus any applicable fees, such as shipping).

  • Are online coin auctions secure?

Yes, if you choose reputable platforms like Copeland Roberts. We use encrypted payment systems, fraud checks, and detailed coin authentication to ensure a secure experience.

  • Can I inspect coins before bidding?

Yes, at local coin auctions, you can attend in person to examine lots. For online-only events, we provide high-resolution images and third-party grading details.

  • How often do you host bullion auctions?

Bullion, such as gold or silver bars, is included in many of our auctions. We also host dedicated "bullion auctions" sessions when demand peaks.

  • Do you handle banknotes?

  • How do live coin auctions work?

An auctioneer announces each lot, taking bids in person or online until a final hammer price is reached.

  • How do I participate in a coin auction?

Register on our site, browse the catalogue, and place bids during live or online events—perfect for those seeking "coin auctions near me" or "coin auctions sydney."

  • What fees do coin auctions charge?
